Knowledge Areas*
Business analysis planning and monitoring
Business analysis planning and monitoring area helps us to determine the process of business analysis realisation and its deliverables, it identifies stakeholders, their roles and responsibilities, defines ways of communication between them and evaluates the amount of work for the project realisation. It also incorporates planning of how requirements will be approached, traced and prioritized and defining the metrics that will be used for monitoring business analysis work and controlling the performance efficiency.
Elicitation
Elicitation identifies actual needs of stakeholders and helps us to understand their business environment. It is crucial that we choose the right elicitation techniques based on the situation (interviews, surveys, workshops, prototypes...). Requirements need to be complete, clear, correct and consistent. Elicitation is the essential part of business analysis, since gathered requirements represent a basis for solution implementation.
Requirements management and communication
Management of requirements assists with understanding the effects of change and linking business goals and objectives to the actual solution that is constructed and delivered. Communicating requirements helps to bring the stakeholders to a common understanding of the solution scope and enables requirements tracking. Because the stakeholders have different backgrounds, this stage is challenging since it might involve conflicts regarding the requirements but it is necessary to determine which set of requirements is relevant to a particular stakeholder group.
Enterprise analysis
Enterprise analysis describes activities that need to be performed by business analysts to analyse the business situation in order to understand business problems and opportunities and identify a business need. Enterprise capabilities are assessed in order to ensure that company is capable to meet identified business needs. Further on, the most appropriate approach to business solution, the solutions scope and the business case with cost evaluation and feasibility studies need to be developed.
Requirements analysis
Requirements analysis contains tasks and techniques used for analyzing, prioritizing, organizing and modelling of requirements and possible constraints that could affect our decision. Implementation of solution which will actually comply with company and stakeholders needs is based on analyzing gathered requirements, their suitability and validity.
Solution assessment and validation
Solution assessment and validation include assessment of the proposed solutions. The decision on appropriate solution is based on business needs, identification of gaps in solutions and possible changes to the solution. When assessing a single solution, business analyst needs to determine, if the solution bring the company enough business value in comparison to the implementation costs. In case of multiple solutions, a business analyst has to select a solution which delivers the highest business value.
